Josh Cheatham

From the treble viol to the “violedegamboes of extraordinarie greatnesse”, Josh Cheatham performs the challenging seventeenth and eighteenth century repertoire shared by both melody and bass instruments. Whether in the viol consort literature, the virtuoso works for solo viola da gamba of Marais, Forqueray and Bach, or orchestral double bass playing, he has become a welcome member of the chamber music and orchestral scene in Europe.

Josh Cheatham studied viola da gamba with Wieland Kuijken and Anneke Pols, violone with Maggie Urquhart in Holland, in addition to Masterclasses with Jordi Savall in Italy and double bass studies with Edgar Meyer at Vanderbilt University. He was awarded a Masters Diploma from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in 2003, and now teaches viola da gamba at the Utrecht Conservatory.

He is the recipient of the 2006 Capriccio Stravagante Prize, founded in 1998 to recognize and support exceptional individuality and talent in the fields of Renaissance and Baroque music.

Projects have included concert performances in Paris, Versailles, the Bach Festival in Lausanne, La Folle Journee in Nantes, Bilbao and Lisbon with Capriccio Stravagante, concerts in Holland with the Netherlands Bach Society directed by Gustav Leonhardt and concerts with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin with Judith van Wanroij and directed by Skip Sempé. He has recorded several productions with Capriccio Stravagante and the Capriccio Stravagante Renaissance Orchestra for the Paradizo label.

Josh Cheatham performs regularly with Capriccio Stravagante. In concerts and recordings with Julien Martin and Skip Sempé, he has performed throughout Europe, the United States and Canada, including the Cite de la Musique in Paris, the Centre de Musique Baroque Versailles, in San Diego and Los Angeles, Berkeley, Montreal, at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Stanford University, Tage Alte Musik Regensburg, MA Festival in Brugge, the Halle Handel Festival, Hamburg / NDR, Nurnberg / Bayerische Rundfunk, Berlin Zeitfenster, BOZAR Music in Brussels, Musikfest Bremen, Festival de Musica Antiga Barcelona and de Bijloke in Ghent.

Josh Cheatham is a featured artist of the Paradizo label. His recordings include viol music of Marais and Sainte-Colombe and "Antico / Moderno", an anthology of Renaissance diminutions.
